RICH UNSCENTED HAND LOTION

FOR BEST RESULTS: Please read the entire recipe, including the notes, before beginning.

Ingredients

280 g Water
40 g Base Oil (see notes)
16 g Coconut Oil
20 g Glycerin
12 g Emulsifying Wax (see notes)
16 g Stearic Acid
12 g Calendula-Infused Oil
2 g Citric Acid
2 g Germaben (see notes)
4000 IU Vitamin E (contents of capsules)

Directions

  1. Carefully weigh and combine all ingredients except the Germaben.

  2. Heat gently, using double boiler or bain-marie. Heat until all ingredients are melted and the mixture begins to appear milky.

  3. Mix well. A spoon or whisk work well, or you can use a stick blender for greater efficiency.

  4. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes.

  5. Add Germaben and mix well.

  6. Pour into pump bottles.

This recipe makes approximately 3 8-oz. bottles.

Notes

Do not substitute ingredients, except where noted. For sources for ingredients, equipment and materials, click here.
Use a good scale. Weighing the ingredients is more accurate than using liquid measures.
Pyrex is the best material to use for a mixing bowl as it handles heat well and does not react with the ingredients.
This recipe has been tested with sweet almond oil and with jojoba oil. Feel free to try other oils, but be sure to use those which are liquid at room temperature.
Emulsifying wax is a vegetable-derived substance designed to help the oil and water stay mixed. The recipe has not been tested with beeswax, but it is likely that it will be a suitable substitute.
Germaben is a mild preservative. A minimal amount is recommended to give this lotion a decent shelf life.
If you wish to add essential oils, you may do so when you add the Germaben. A total of 4 g of individual or blended essential oils should be sufficient.
